NofaLab performs MOSH MOAH analysis

NofaLab now performs MOSH MOAH analysis in accordance with the updated EN 16995! We updated our sample preparation and analysis to the newest standard.

MOSH (mineral oil saturated hydrocarbons) and MOAH (mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons) can be harmful for our health and doesn’t belong in our foods. They can migrate into food by accident, for example in the production process (e.g., synthetic lubricants) or from the packaging materials (e.g., printing inks in the cartons or jute bags). MOSH and MOAH migrates though the chain. If olives contain MOSH and MOAH, the olive oil contains it also.

Earlier this year, the EU Standing Committee on Plants, Animals, Food and Feed (SC PAFF) released guidance levels for MOAH [1]. Nofalab can reach these levels.

  • 0.5 mg/kg for dry foods (≤ 4% fat/oils)
  • 1 mg/kg for foods with > 4% fat/oil
  • 2 mg/kg for fats and oils

For the analysis of MOSH and MOAH, we use a PAL-HPLC-GC-FID. This apparatus prepares the samples in the most efficient way possible. While measuring this first sample, it prepares the next one for analysis. The analysis itself is also very efficient. The LC part of the system separates MOSH and MOAH. MOSH and MOAH are analysed simultaneously on GC-FID.
